You’ve probably taken the decision to start a blog or a website and this means you’ve done a bit of research.

This also means you will have come across the term SEO or Search Engine Optimization.

A search engine is a website that helps you to search for information from across the internet. The search results from your search query are compiled into an organized list of web pages called SERPS (search engine results pages).

Google’s primary directive is to ensure they serve up the most relevant web pages to your search. 

It’s actually pretty simple when it comes down to it. As the author of Stupid Simple SEO, Mike Pearson says:

It’s the number one search engine in the world today and that’s not likely to change so, as far as this guide is concerned, when we’re talking about search engine optimization (SEO) we’re doing so within the content ecosystem that Google provides.

Learning SEO is a bit like trying to master a Rubix cube.

Remember nothing is set in stone, SEO ranking factors can change, but most experts agree that the following principles apply in establishing good SEO practice for your site:

  • Create a fast, well-optimized, clean and user-friendly blog that’s easy for your readers to navigate
  • Building links, including links between your posts and your site, links to other sites, and getting other sites, especially high-authority sites, to link  to you
  • Identifying and using keywords that respond to a user’s search query without keyword stuffing
  • Focussing your blog entirely on providing added value to your readers

Ok, I’m sold but how long before I see results

Each of these topics can become quite in-depth themselves, so I don’t recommend getting too lost in them right now as it can be overwhelming.

The most important thing in getting started with SEO is to set up your site in the most SEO-friendly way and I’ve written this review to help you decide whether the Stupid Simple SEO course is a good investment in helping you to do that.

How to get started with SEO

Remember SEO is a long game. Please don’t get disheartened if you don’t see results immediately. If your blog is super niche and you really focus your keywords and SEO research on that then you could see results almost straight away.

My blog is about personal finance, which is a huge and competitive niche and as it’s still relatively young, my traffic is still in the early stages, growing and increasing month on month in the right direction.  

But when I started I had absolutely no clue about SEO.

I have created several websites and blogs previously, but I just wasn’t up to speed about SEO and how important it is. 

The Stupid Simple SEO course was like a lighthouse in a storm – it just shined through the mist and murk. I know that sounds a bit cheesy but Mike, who created the course, has a really clear way of describing the challenges around SEO and simplifying things into bite-size chunks that make it less intimidating. 

Is Stupid Simple SEO the right course for you

Stupid Simple SEO course is stupidly simple (in a good way). It provides a really plain-speaking, comprehensive, step-by-step guide to help you tackle the challenges of SEO. 

I discovered the Stupid Simple SEO course as a result of a recommendation by another successful blogger and I can honestly say, out of all the courses I’ve done, I enjoyed this one the most. 

I really enjoyed Mike’s course: Stupid Simple SEO because it gave me the insight to analyze my niche, see what’s already working and apply those strategies to my blog. Mike explains things in such a simple way that really embodies the course name!

Organic Search Vs Social

Mike also delves into the sources of traffic to your blog (organic search, social, direct, referral). He explores why Google (organic search) is a more consistent and better source of traffic than Social (Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram).

With platforms like Pinterest, you can end up chasing the traffic rather than creating high-quality content with embedded SEO.

I love using Pinterest and creating beautiful Pins, as you can see around my blog, but they do seem to change their algorithms quite often and this can really hammer your traffic if you’re overly reliant on traffic from Pinterest.

Is SEO all about scaling traffic?

Yes and no.

Module 4: Strategic Content Formula (Part 2)

This module’s focus is on creating EPIC CONTENT for your blog. That includes determining keyword competitiveness and researching and outlining content. Mike will show you how to find long-tail keywords (a string of words as a keyword, i.e. a long keyword) and he will also let you know why word count matters and the perfect length for your blog posts. 

This module will go through ranking, linking, on-page SEO, and setting all of this up in an effective way.

Module 5: The Content Audit

Here Mike introduces us to the concept of the content audit and why you might want to undertake it on your existing blog. He’ll guide you through Google Analytics, Pinterest content, and underperforming content. 

Module 6: Expertise, Authority and Trust

The module shows you how to build your expertise, authority, and trust – key factors in creating a high-quality site. This is also known as Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines and following them will help you improve your content, your SEO, and your traffic. 

Module 7: Introduction to Backlinks

If you’ve never heard of backlinks this is the perfect introduction. A backlink is essentially a link to your blog from another site or blog. It links ‘back’ to you, therefore it is a backlink. And this module takes you through the characteristics of a good, or spammy, backlink and why they are so important to the SEO of your blog. 

Module 8: Building Links With Guest Posting

Ok, so this is the module that I am still working through and that’s because Guest Posting involves contacting other blog owners to Guest Post on their site or accepting Guest Posts on your own. As a naturally introverted kind of guy, it’s not something that comes easily to me. However, it’s worth exploring because its such an effective strategy for improving your SEO. 

Discover how to get organized for guest post campaigns, as well as finding guest post opportunities and sending and writing guest posts. 

Module 9: Help a Reporter Out (HARO) Link Building

One of the best ways to get a huge SEO boost is via a link to your highly authoritative blog or post via the HARO service. This is essential when a reporter links to your blog, as a reference point, for an article that they are writing. Obviously, it helps if your blog fits the nature and scope of their article but, if you can nail this module, you can make your SEO soar. 

It’s recommended that you complete these modules in sequential order because this follows the logical development of your blog.

If you already have an existing blog, it’s still worth working through the build phases – that way you’ll be able to revisit the process of building your site to ensure that it’s set up in the best possible way for SEO.

And once you’ve completed the course you’ll appreciate that all of the techniques and formulas outlined in are strategies that you can re-employ over and over again. 

I can honestly say that the idea of promoting my blog is a challenging one for me because I am naturally introverted and so the idea of contacting other blog owners out of the blue is not entirely comfortable for me. But you have to remember that people love to help!

Pinterest SEO Versus Google SEO

Pinterest is a bit like the love child of a social media platform and a search engine.

Unlike other social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram, Pinterest can be very targeted because when people use Pinterest (Pinners) they are actively searching for the topics that interest them. 

This means that Pinterest can be a great source of targeted traffic for your blog. 

I love using Pinterest because I’m a very visual person and you’ll see my pins all over this blog; however, when it comes to nailing your blog’s SEO I really recommend that you focus your efforts on Google, to begin with.

Here’s why (including some of the key differences, and opportunities in both)::

  • Google is broader and has a wider reach. Pinners search Pinterest for inspiration, to learn new things and plan. This means it’s popular with Fashion, Food and creative niches. Google has a much broader remit that covers just about everything. 
  • Google users must actively search to find your content, which means if your site is served up to them they are much more likely to convert (buy something). Pinterest users scroll through pins. 
  • An algorithm change on Pinterest can scupper your ranking on the platform because there are literally millions of pins and small tweaks can really affect your positions. Google ranks you according to the quality of your website, over time, so as long as you produces high quality your ranking is more likely to be sustained and increase, over time. 

Traffic from Google isn’t necessarily better than traffic from Pinterest.

The key distinction is that you can create hundreds of pins that look great and link through to content on your blog that isn’t necessarily ranking well on Google. 

In other words, ranking on Pinterest doesn’t necessarily rely on producing in-depth quality content; if you learn how to play the Pinterest algorithm you can rank on Pinterest very well. Whereas with Google you pretty much have to put the work in. Over time this is more sustainable because you won’t constantly be playing catch up with Pinterest when they change their ranking algorithm.

I recommend you follow the approach that helps you to build a sustainable blog.
